Nwa-Mitwa-Tzaneen: On 17 September 2014, Limpopo Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism (LEDET), will host the provincial leg of the World Tourism Day  Celebrations at Khalanga Lodge, Nwa-Mitwa in Tzaneen. This will just be a week before the World Tourism Day Celebrations, which South Africa will host in the Northern Cape Province at Haksteenpan, Upington. This will be held in line with our country’s  theme, “Tourism Transforming Lives”

The same day, the MEC for LEDET, Mr. Seaparo Sekoati, will participate in the Provincial Tourism Month & National Arbor Week celebrations to take place at the same venue, that is, Nwa-Mitwa. The event will also be attended by District and Local Municipalities, Tourism Stakeholders, Local Communities, Greater Tzaneen Economic Development Agency  and the Taxi Industry  to celebrate Provincial Tourism Month and to  promote greening in the province.

World Tourism Day (WTD) is celebrated globally every year on the 27th September as declared by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO).  The UNWTO announced that the 2014 WTD will be hosted in Mexico under the theme “Tourism and Community Development. Its purpose is to foster awareness amongst the global community of the importance of tourism and its social, cultural and political and economic value. The event seeks to address the global challenges outlined in the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDG) and highlight the tourism sector’s contribution to achieving the goals.

In South Africa, September Month is declared as Tourism Month, a national event for South Africa will be hosted in the Northern Cape Province.  Provinces will also host provincial celebration events and activities.

The MEC for LEDET said: “We are focusing our efforts on using tourism to improve under-developed areas of our province, particularly rural areas like Nwa-Mitwa, where we are today to make a positive impact in our people’s lives. It is our obligation as a Department to unlock the economic potential of our communities by igniting rural tourism opportunities in the form of culture and heritage, which are another hidden treasure of our province.”

The evening of the 16th September 2014, a day before the celebrations, will be a hive of activity as the Mayor of Tzaneen, Cllr. Dikeledi  Mmetle, will announce Local Tourism Award winners at the Welcome dinner, which the MEC will also attend.

The MEC calls on the people of the province to use the week commencing from 15-19 September to visit Limpopo Provincial Parks, which will be open for free to all as part of Limpopo Wildlife Mahala week.

On the 26th September 2014, the MEC will lead a delegation comprising LTA officials, Provincial Lilizela Award winner, Limpopo Guest Manor, in the ETEYA category and the tourism role players in the province to the World Tourism Day Celebration held in the Northern Cape Province.
