Province readies for Heritage Day

Sep 23, 2014

The province’s official Heritage Day celebration will take place at the Mapuntsula sports ground in Lephephane village near Tzaneen tomorrow.

“Like the rest of the country, the province will celebrate its heritage under the theme, ‘Celebrating 20 years of democracy: Tell your story that moves South Africa forward,” spokesperson for the provincial department of sport, arts and culture, Mabakane Mangena, said.

The province would use the day to showcase its diverse cultures to remind communities of their traditions.

“Our rich heritage will be showcased in the form of exhibitions, poetry, music and traditional dances,” Mangena said. “The day will promote social cohesion.”

Each of the province’s five districts has been allocated a bus to ferry performers to the event.

The Mopani district, being the host, has been allocated more busses to bring as many people as possible, the department of sports, arts and culture said.

Premier Stan Mathabatha would deliver a keynote address after meeting with some of the performers.

As a build-up to the main event, various communities in the province have already began celebrating their heritages since the beginning of the month.

The government has also declared September a tourism month to dovetail with visits to heritage sites.

Celebrations begin at 9am tomorrow and will run until the afternoon.
