More buffalo for Marakele park

Apr 11, 2014

A herd of 10 buffalo were released into the Marakele National Park in Limpopo this month following the successful re-introduction of a herd of 20 buffalo in 2013.

In 2009, the park was left with no buffalo population due to theileriosis, a disease that was prevalent in the area at the time. After the disease was cleared, 15 bulls were re-introduced followed by another herd in 2013.

“The herd that we introduced in the park last year is doing very well and we believe these ones will also adapt with ease,” said Johan Taljaard, Park Manager at Marakele.

He added that the decision to add more cows was to significantly grow the buffalo population in the park.
