Kremetart Cycle Race Lives Up To Expectations

Jun 9, 2014

Makhado; Limpopo – The organizers of the annual Kremetart Cycle Race held over the weekend of 07 and 08 June 2014 have kept their promise of staging yet another successful event. The 25th installment of the race was held in the town of Makhado which was a hive of activity due to the high volumes of visitors to either take part in the cycle race or support the cyclists.

Limpopo Tourism Agency (LTA) saw the need to support the race as immensely contributes to tourism and economic growth of the town. For this weekend only, the town has received an injection of over R20 mil from this event. Accommodation was fully booked in and around Makhado, which is a positive sign of tourism growth in the province.

This is the only 4 stage-one-day  race in the country that stretches over 175 Km on the scenic Soutspanberg mountains. There was also a mountain-bike race with scenic routes of the Soutspanberg Mountains for the more adventurous. This is in line with what LTA showcased at this year’s Tourism Indaba from 10 to 12 May 2014 in Durban. The Agency’s theme this year, “Special Interest Features” sought to create awareness about various offerings including adventure activities like mountain biking given the province’s topography, which makes it a suitable terrain for such activities.

The Chairperson of the LTA Board, Mr. Mashilo Matsetela, during the prize giving dinner said, “Our three year old partnership with Kremetart Cycle Race Organizers and the Makhado Municipality has come to fruition as most cyclists coming to our province for this race come with families, which continues to boost out tourist arrivals during this season. Our wish is to continue harnessing this relationship while creating others for purposes of growing tourism in the province.” He further urged cyclists to come back next year but also committed LTA to continuing to support the event in the next coming years.

For the first time this year, the race had two disabled hand cyclists participating, namely Messrs. Barend Coetzee and Euvrard Geldenhuys. In total the organizers registered 2 000 cyclists this year compared to 1 200 of last year. Overall winners of the event are as follows:

Position Male Position Female
1. H.B. Kruger (Bonitas Pro Cycling) 1. Charlene Roux
2. David Marais (Abantu) 2. Carla Oberholdzer
3. Calvin Beneke (EuropcarSA) 3. Juanita Venter

The event organizer, Ms. Rhenda Alexandra, said, “The fact that our community has been involved with the PPC Kremetart Race for 25 years is the reason why this event is so successful. Every single person, from the directors of Kremetart Cycling, the Sponsors, SAPS, Traffic Officials, workers, played a great part in making this the prestigious event that it is today.

We are blessed to have such a dedicated community with passionate leaders, directing us to excel even more. Makhado is getting noticed and we all hope that Limpopo Tourism Agency will be actively involved in supporting our future events.”
